The team at agfx were extremely proud to play an important role at this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards by providing the live web streaming for the main ceremony at the Wales Millennium Centre. The three hour event in the main Donald Gordon Theatre was watched across the UK and overseas. In addition, we were also very pleased to be the sponsors of the BAFTA Cymru Award for Visual Graphic Effects.

In fact we thought we would share with you in detail what the complete live streaming process involved. Not to bore you of course, but rather to highlight how complex and fun the process was.

The creative challenge we were given by BAFTA Cymru was to ensure that the glittering awards ceremony could be accessed live via a web stream for audiences both within the UK and all around the world. On our part we needed to have perfect timing and be meticulous in ensuring that each piece of technology that we were using could deal with both the build up testing and the long transmission.

Here is a taste of what the live stream looked like:

For those of you who were unable to attend the ceremony or watch it live on the night, the proceeding and all of the award winners can still be viewed on BAFTA’s YouTube channel. Keep an eye out for Hollywood actor Michael Sheen, rising star Aneurin Barnard fresh from the BBC drama The White Queen and the star and writer of Sky 1′s Stella, Ruth Jones.

Technically, the event mainly involved us providing a point to point infrastructure layer using satellites to stream the ceremony live from Cardiff Bay to BAFTA ’s YouTube channel.

To accomplish this we employed 1 Apple Mac and 1 Windows server both running Flash media encoder, with the primary stream transmitting on the Apple machine and the backup stream being carried on the Windows server – in case of any emergencies – thankfully there weren’t any!

We also used our satellite broadband system for the up-link to the YouTube site.

All of this was handled in our Outside Broadcasting (OB) vehicle where we took an embedded feed from the scanner and used our Black Magic Studio Mixing Desk to overlay graphics such as the BAFTA Logo and also some graphics for social media from time to time and control the audio volumes.

All in all, it was quite the challenge but a rewarding one considering that each team member at agfx executed their role flawlessly whilst being able to enjoy the glittering event with the company of some of the greatest creative talent in Wales. We are really thankful for all the encouragement we received from BAFTA Cymru and are also happy and proud that BAFTA Cymru asked us to carry out the graphics designing and Live Streaming for the second year running.

We hope to deliver high standards of the services to BAFTA Cymru in the years going ahead as well.
